Robert (Rob) J. Donaldson is a proven global marketing leader who combines keen corporate strategy and execution with a passion for profitable growth and a genuine entrepreneurial spirit. Throughout his stellar 30-year career, he has taken more than 20 products from conception to market in the diverse industries of medical instrumentation, optics, imaging systems, safety monitors, nuclear power instrumentation, educational products and defense. He has originated and implemented strategic and operational marketing programs, distribution channel realignments and partnerships for businesses throughout the U.S., Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America.
Donaldson is team-oriented leader experienced in all facets of marketing managing cross-functional teams in matrix organizations. His ability to assess market opportunities, inspire confidence, engage teams and implement programs drives bottom-line results whether for a new, existing or turnaround company. He has helped plan and implement nearly 30 M&A initiatives to enhance companies' long-term growth, profitability and shareholder value. In addition to his current position at Chief Outsiders, he also serves as President of Inchieve LLC, a producer of web-based, post-acquisition business integration software.
Working predominantly within technical industries, Donaldson has an impressive record of reinvigorating new life and growth into companies through both organic and inorganic growth strategies. One notable example is his assimilation of four formerly competing companies into one unified division at Heraeus Noblelight by creating and restructuring “Centers of Excellences” while optimizing the go-to-market strategy and consolidating processes. Prior to his success at Heraeus Noblelight, Donaldson helped IST’s Analytical Instrument and Spectral Technology businesses go from loss to profitability in one year by launching a new product line, realigning distribution channels and managing all business processes. At IST, he also identified and formalized partnerships in the nuclear power and defense industry to enable worldwide expansion. For Leica, a global manufacturer of precision instrumentation in healthcare and biotech, Donaldson's innovative horizontal growth strategy broadened the histology product offering, launching a new portfolio of complementary products to establish Leica as a market leader.
Donaldson has been at the forefront of opening new markets, working with a U.S. Department of Commerce energy trade delegation to help improve relations with Chinese businesses prior to the lifting of trade sanctions. He participated in numerous programs to help stimulate U.S. nuclear power generation industry trade with China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea, worked with a pre-NAFTA congressional delegation, and was a leader in transitioning his company’s business and marketing approach with the formation of the European Union. He experienced the reunification while living in Germany and helped Chinese companies adapt to the massive changes in marketing practice. In all, Donaldson has organized many joint meetings where international distributors and business partners meet with the mutual intent to collectively grow their businesses.
Aside from his passion to grow businesses, Donaldson and his wife live in Atlanta and enjoy hiking the North Georgia mountains, golf, skiing and following baseball.
