From a podcast interview featuring Chi Yau, CEO and Co-Founder of FuelRod.
In a recent episode of CEO Growth Talks, Chi Yao, the CEO and founder of Fuel Rod, discussed the innovative solutions his company provides for mobile phone users. Fuel Rod offers a portable, swappable charging system available at major airports and theme parks, allowing customers to exchange depleted chargers for fully charged ones at kiosks. Yao emphasized the environmental benefits of their product, highlighting their commitment to recycling used chargers, which provides a triple win for consumers, the planet, and stockholders.
"Vision is so important and strategy--a fully ironed out strategy--that your team is fully bought in on. And yet you still have to maintain flexibility when things happen and you need to pivot." - Chi Yau
During the conversation, Yao and his Chief Outsiders fractional CMO, Adriana Lynch, shared how Fuel Rod successfully navigated the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. As travel nearly halted, they pivoted by expanding distribution through online platforms like Amazon and diversifying their kiosk locations to include non-travel venues like hospitals. This strategic shift, coupled with the increasing popularity of their products, led to a significant revenue increase, doubling the company’s revenue compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Yao also reflected on the lessons he learned as an entrepreneur, stressing the importance of having a clear vision while being flexible with strategies. He noted that while the company’s vision remained constant, they adapted their approach as needed, particularly in response to the pandemic. This adaptability, combined with strong execution of marketing strategies, has been key to Fuel Rod's sustained growth. The webinar concluded with Yao discussing the company’s exploration of new financial avenues, allowing regular consumers to invest in their business, further democratizing access to startup investments.
